My car has a bad transmission fluid leak, I'm pretty sure the the transmission doesn't have many more miles left on it. It slips and hard shifts. But every time I check the fluid it always seems to be in the same spot on the dipstick, I check it with the engine running in park. From time to time I add transmission fluid anyways The first time I added some it seemed to help a lot but now there seems to be no change. What color should the fluid be in the car, when I check it's a light pink, but when I put it in it's dark red. Should I try to service the transmission or just let it die? Here's the scoop: I'm aware I am leaking an unknown amount of coolant. More than less though. Slight back story. Due to financial struggles... for about a month, I was putting water into my reservoir and my radiator cap, but only driving minimally (knowing I was having some radiator issues). I know this is wrong and shouldn't be continued for long. Seriously, guys... don't badger me on that, cause I had no other choice. So, I purchased some 50/50 coolant a couple days ago... and I went through a cycle of that. I just finished a short drive from my job to home, and arrived home just in time, THANK GOD, cause It was a close call. Hood was steaming slightly, but would've easily turned into a fire, if I drove another 2 miles, I bet. Turned off my car, popped the hood, and it was "hissing". The best way I can describe this... car is in decent shape, I must say, but not tip top. The location of the hissing and coolant spraying/hissing, was directly to the LEFT of the engine. Could it simply be a hose? It was kind of dark out, but even in the light, I could not see EXACTLY where the leak was coming from. If anybody can give me some suggestions... I'd greatly appreciate it. Maybe you can't tell me EXACTLY what the problem is, but I know dealing with car repairs can be expensive, so maybe a suggestion on how to act from here on out. Bottom line... probably shouldn't drive the car, until I know the issue is fixed. Otherwise, I'm spending far too much money on coolant. Thanks a bunch to any insight in advance! car insurance. BMW . How to Charge a Cold Car BatteryCold weather drastically affects the performance of your car battery. Frigid temperatures slow the chemical reactions within the battery and therefore limit its capacity to store electricity. What's more, once your battery is drained and exposed to severe cold, it becomes susceptible to damage, ruining the plates inside the battery as well as the battery case. In addition, your engine's oil thickens in the cold, which makes it more difficult for the engine to start and puts excessive strain on the battery. Thus, keeping your battery fully charged during the winter months is extremely important. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need 12-volt battery charger Proper size wrenches/sockets (to remove battery) Distilled water (for standard-duty batteries) Step by Step : 1 Remove the drained battery from your vehicle. You'll need to use the correct size wrenches to loosen the terminals and remove any shields or brackets that are holding the battery in place. 2 Place the battery in a well-ventilated environment where the battery can slowly warm above freezing. Do not place the battery near open fire or heat. Remember, you'll have to use your battery charger, so a nearby electrical outlet and/or extension cord will be necessary. 3 Check the battery for physical damage after you've allowed it warm up. If it's a standard-duty battery, remove the caps and check the water level. Add distilled water if necessary; just enough to fill the bottom of the refill holes. Once you've made sure the battery is full of water and is undamaged, you can proceed with recharging it. 4 Check your battery charger to make sure all switches are off. You can also check to make sure it is set to 12 volts. Then hook the positive clamp of the charger to the positive post on your drained battery. Hook the negative clamp to the negative post in the same manner. 5 Plug your battery charger into a nearby electrical outlet, using an extension cord if necessary. 6 Adjust the settings on your battery charger, if any. Some chargers allow you to set the amp-rate at which the battery charges. The higher the amps, the faster your drained battery will recharge. Some chargers also have a timer. Set the charger according to your wishes and turn the power on. Charging times will vary, so check on the battery often. 7 Unplug the charger once the battery has a complete charge. Turn the switch off and unhook the negative clamp, then the positive clamp. 8 Place the battery back into your vehicle, making sure you fasten the terminals securely to the battery posts. Replace all shields and brackets and start your vehicle. Tips & Warnings You can prevent cold weather battery problems by cleaning your battery terminals and posts. Use either a wire brush or post and terminal cleaning tool specifically designed for the task. Also, make sure you wipe down your battery, as dirt can trap moisture, which then contributes to freezing problems. Don't let your vehicle sit idle without starting it for long periods of time during the winter. Start it and allow the engine to run in order to keep your battery charged.
BMW . How to Charge a Polaris ATV BatteryBased in North America, Polaris is a company that has built a strong reputation for producing reliable and powerful all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). The company's selection of sport-based machines are enjoyed by many off-road enthusiasts. Unfortunately, these machines often find themselves in storage for long periods of time, which can lead to the eventual discharge of their batteries. Luckily, removing the battery for a quick recharge is a simple enough task for the Polaris owners. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Socket wrench and sockets Socket extension Phillips screwdriver Battery charger Step by Step : 1 Remove the seat from the ATV. Most Polaris ATVs come equipped with a locking mechanism that secures the seats. Pull the seat release latch to unlock the seat. Lift the rear of the seat upwards, and pull it toward the rear of the ATV. Set the seat aside. 2 Locate the battery tray under the seat. Remove the metal battery strap bracket, using a socket wrench and an extension to unscrew the bolt that secures the bracket to the frame. Pull the bracket out of the battery tray. 3 Disconnect the battery, using a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the terminal bolts. Remove the black negative (-) lead first, followed by the red positive (+) lead. Pull the battery out of the battery tray. 4 Connect the battery to a battery charger. Connect the charger's positive (+) lead first, followed by the negative (-) lead. Allow the battery to charge completely, following the charger's recommended charging times. Disconnect the battery when it is fully charged. Remove the negative (-) lead first, followed by the positive (+) lead. 5 Install the battery into the battery tray. Place the metal battery strap bracket over the battery and secure it to the frame using a socket wrench and extension to tighten the mounting bolt. Reconnect the ATV's leads to the battery's terminals, connecting the red positive (+) lead first, followed by the black negative (-) lead. 6 Mount the seat. Slide the tabs on the front of the seat into the frame-mounted catch tabs. Lower the rear of the seat onto the frame and press down until the locking mechanism clicks. Pull the seat upward to ensure that it is locked into place. *on to learn macram6 or fly-tying, take the time to educate yourself about an automotive system that most people take for granted, even though it may be the only system in your car that can kill you if you don't keep it in good repair. As you've probably guessed — especially if you read chapter titles — I'm talking about your brakes. Brake System Basics One reason that today's vehicles are the safest in history is that they're equipped with hydraulic brake systems designed to operate on very simple principles with a minimum of parts and maintenance. Since 1968, all vehicles are also equipped with dual brake systems to ensure that if one set of brakes fails, the other set will still be able to stop your car; and with a dashboard light to warn you if your front or rear brakes fail. Figure 10-1 shows a basic brake system with a power booster, disc brakes on the front wheels, and drum brakes on the rear wheels. Your vehicle may not have power brakes or may have disc or drum brakes all around, but the principle is the same in any case. The following sections take a look at each of the components of a brake system, starting with the first point of contact between you and your brakes and working down the line to the brakes themselves. 180 Part II: What Makes It Go?. 427

Jeep Liberty. * The brake system. The brake pedal The brake pedal in your car is attached to a shaft that leads to the brake master cylinder. When you step on the brake pedal, small pistons in the master cylinder force brake fluid out of the master cylinder and into the brake lines. I tell you how to buy the proper brake fluid and work with it safely in "Flushing and Changing Brake Fluid" in Chapter 18. If your brakes are working properly, the pedal should stop a couple of inches from the floor. It should push down easily, stop firmly at its lowest point without feeling spongy, and stay put instead of sinking down slowly when you put normal pressure on it. To check the brakes on your vehicle, see Chapter 18. Figure 10-2: BMW . How do you jack up the car to change the tire 1997 c230?

If your car has power brakes, a brake booster is located between the brake pedal and the master cylinder to increase the force applied to the pistons in the master cylinder so that your car can stop with less effort on your part (see Figure 10-2). The two most common types are vacuum-assisted boosters, which use engine vacuum and atmospheric pressure to do the job, and hydraulic-assisted boosters (commonly referred to as "hydro-boost units"), which use hydraulic pressure from the car's power steering to accomplish the same thing. Some vehicles with anti-lock brake systems (ABS) have a hydraulic pump to generate pressure for booster operation. (There's a section on ABS at the end of this chapter.) Power brake booster -Master cylinder The brake master cylinder Look under the hood of your car, up near the firewall on the driver's side. You should see either a metal box or a plastic bottle. Have you found it? This piece is the brake master cylinder (see Figures 10-3 and 10-4). It's filled with brake fluid and is connected to your brake pedal, with brake lines leading from it to the four wheels of your car. When you step on the brake pedal, fluid goes out of the master cylinder into the brake lines. When you release the pedal, the fluid flows back into the master cylinder. In Chapter 18,1 show you how to open and check the master cylinder safely. This task is also part of the monthly under-the-hood check in Chapter 3. 182 Part ll: What Makes l! Go? BMW .
